KI-ITC Augmented Reality Research Center

Vision
KAIST KI-ITC ARRC envisions a future where the physical and virtual worlds are seamlessly integrated to transform human-computer interaction. By developing open and scalable XR platforms, the center aims to lead innovation in post-metaverse technologies, enabling immersive and collaborative experiences in daily life and professional contexts. Through interdisciplinary research, global collaboration, and talent development, ARRC seeks to shape a sustainable digital future that enhances connectivity, creativity, and human well-being.

Research Theme

[Lead Research Projects]

  • Real-time XR Interface Technology for Environmental Adaption

Figure 1 Three key components of a meta-object with a virtual drone example: (A) Inherited properties, (B) multisensory feedback, and (C) scene graph-based data representation.

This project introduces the ‘meta-object,’ a virtual object that mirrors real-world form and function for seamless physical-virtual interaction. It provides multisensory feedback and is managed via a scene graph model for optimized performance and NFT-based exchange. The goal is to transform digital engagement and enable practical applications in areas like education, collaboration, and urban planning.

  • Development of WISE AR UI/UX Platform for Smart Glasses

This project aims to develop WISE, a smart glasses UI/UX platform that intuitively reflects user intention and environmental context. It features dynamic interfaces that recognize spaces and objects as semantic tools, supporting multitasking, object-based interaction, and indoor positioning. The platform will be released as open-source software to support AR/metaverse adoption across various industries.

[Collaborative Research Projects]

  • Development of Open XR platform for high immersive collaboration

Figure 3 Research Framework for Foundational Technologies to Enhance Immersion and Social Presence in an Open XR Platform

This project aims to develop an open XR platform for immersive, socially engaging remote collaboration. Using scene graphs and realistic avatars, it supports lifelike interaction and promotes XR adoption in fields like education and healthcare.

  • Interdisciplinary Research Integrating AR, AI, Cognition, and Architecture for Trans-Temporal and Trans-Spatial Interaction

Figure 4 Step-by-step trans-temporal and trans-spatial interaction scenarios enabled through interdisciplinary research integrating AR, AI, cognitive science, and architecture

This study aims to develop AI-driven instructor agents and immersive AR to overcome time and space barriers in education. By building scene-based representations and updating them in real time, it enables adaptive and personalized asynchronous learning.

  • Collaborative Interfaces for AR Content Authoring Among SpaceTop Users

This research aims to develop an intuitive interface for collaborative AR content authoring among SpaceTop users. By combining technologies like SLAM, GCN, LLMs, and generative AI, the system supports seamless scene creation and editing. It enables multiple users to co-design shared scenes through voice-driven multimodal interaction in a VR environment.

[Education]

  • Graduate School of Metaverse Convergence
The Graduate School of Metaverse aims to cultivate global R&D leaders with creative, interdisciplinary skills to build a sustainable metaverse ecosystem. Through collaboration across six departments and a focus on global exchange and industry ties, the program fosters innovators who create social impact through real-world XR applications.
  • Meta-XR Industry-Academia Collaboration Program
The Meta-XR Industry-Academia Collaboration Program aims to train interdisciplinary experts who connect academic theory with industry practice in XR and AI. With two specialized tracks and practical collaboration, it prepares graduates to lead innovation in immersive education, digital healthcare, and smart media.

[International Cooperation]

  • NewFun Daejeon: KAIST-NYU Collaborative Initiative for Research and Education in the Post-Metaverse

Figure 7 Meta-AI: Space Convergence – Immersive Experience Authoring – Reward System Implementation Framework

This project aims to build a strategic R&D partnership between KAIST and NYU through the Meta-AI initiative, linking museum spaces via generative AI and establishing PMRC@NYU as a global research hub. It focuses on space convergence, immersive content authoring, and a reward system combining token economy and psychological engagement. The project will advance metaverse technologies and nurture global talent through ISMAX and a KAIST-NYU Dual Degree program.
