Research Theme

AI fundamentals cover topics that are highly related to building major artificial brain functions such as human-like sensing, perception, learning, inference and behavior.

Brain Science and Engineering

Brain science is the interdisciplinary, scientific study of the human brain and its processes. It examines the nature, the tasks, and the functions of brain and study intelligence and behavior, with a focus on how nervous systems represent, process, and transform information. Mental faculties of concern to brain scientists include language, perception, memory, attention, reasoning, and emotion.

Major research fields include, but not limited to
  • Study to understand how the human brain works
  • Study to create machines exhibiting behavior comparable to those of humans.

Machine Learning

Machine learning explores the study and construction of algorithms that can learn from and make predictions on data – such algorithms overcome following strictly static program instructions by making data-driven predictions or decisions, through building a model from sample inputs. Machine learning is employed in a range of computing tasks where designing and programming explicit algorithms with good performance is difficult or unfeasible.

Major research fields include, but not limited to
  • Artificial neural networks
  • Deep learning
  • Inductive logic programming
  • Bayesian networks
  • Reinforcement learning
  • Representation learning
  • Sparse dictionary learning
  • Genetic algorithms
  • Rule-based machine learning

Multimodal Perception and Interaction (audio/visual/text)

Multimodal perception is the capability of a artificial system to interpret data in a manner that is similar to the way humans use their senses to relate to the world around them.
The goal of multimodal perception is to give machines the ability to see, hear, feel and perceive the world as humans do and therefore for them to be able to explain in an human way.

Major research fields include, but not limited to
  • Visual representation and recognition
  • Video captioning
  • Speech recognition/understanding and synthesis
  • Tactile perception
  • Multimodal integration of text, visual, auditory and tactile information

Natural Language Processing, Understanding and Generation

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a field of computer science, artificial intelligence and computational linguistics concerned with the interactions between computers and human (natural) languages, and, in particular, concerned with programming computers to fruitfully process large natural language corpora. Challenges in natural language processing frequently involve natural language understanding and natural language generation.
Natural Language Understanding (NLU) deals with machine reading comprehension. There is considerable commercial interest in the field because of its application to news-gathering, text categorization, voice-activation, archiving, and large-scale content-analysis.

Major research fields include, but not limited to
  • Visual representation and recognition
  • Video captioning
  • Speech recognition/understanding and synthesis
  • Tactile perception
  • Multimodal integration of text, visual, auditory and tactile information

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the capability of individuals to recognize their own and other people's emotions, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one's goal. (Studies have shown that people with high EI have greater mental health, job performance, and leadership skills although no causal relationships have been shown and such findings are likely to be attributable to general intelligence and specific personality traits rather than emotional intelligence as a construct.)

Major research fields include, but not limited to
  • Facial emotion recognition
  • Speech emotion recognition
  • Text emotion recognition
  • Multimodal emotion recognition
  • Ethics intelligence
