The IoT (Internet of Things) is a technology that connects all of the daily (physical or virtual) objects we interact with and provides up-to-date information and appropriate services to users. The IoT allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems. IoT technology makes objects alive (sensing and controlling), intelligent (processing information by itself or with others) and cooperative (exchanging information with each other), and it provides users with smart mashup services.

Research Topics
  • IoT/WoT Interworking Framework
To realize the IoT vision, several IoT platforms are being developed for their specific purpose. Despite their interworking support features, it is the still the problem how to integrate and interwork the different IoT devices and platforms. For this problem, we focus on the standardization of interworking interface and on the development of the efficient frame architecture for mashup services.
Also, the IoT requires high scalability in the network space to handle the huge number of devices. With billions of devices being added to the internet space, IPv6 might be a good candidate in handling the network layer scalability. But, there is an issue how to compromise the protocol overhead with the network scalability.

  • IoT Data Stream Analysis / Machine Learning for Situation Awareness
Ambient intelligence and autonomous control are not part of the original concept of IoT. However, there is a shift in research to integrate the concepts of IoT and autonomous control. The stream of IoT sensor data enables us to collect more precise and more various information of environments. Base on these information, we focus on developing the machine learning technology for situation/environment awareness and prediction.

  • Identification and Tracking for Real-world Objects
The main purpose of original IoT concept is for the identification and tracking for every-day things. This is still valid but not satisfied enough yet. Base on the Oliot platform which is the our reference implementation of GS1/EPCglobal EPCIS(Electronic Product Code Information Service), we focus on enhancing the identification and traceability performances to realize the vision of IoT world.

Key Technology
  • Oliot - GS1 based IoT framework
  • EagleEye - Oliot based health data monitoring system
  • ThingsGate - Instance based IoT/WoT mashup service platform
