Cancer Metastasis Control Center (CMCC) in KI for the BioCentury

Our newly launched Cancer Metastasis Control Center (CMCC) focuses on understanding the mechanisms of cancer metastasis, i.e., the spread of cancer to other parts of body and developing means that control this deadly process. Our center specifically puts an emphasis on deciphering epigenetic mechanisms involved in cancer progression and metastasis. Epigenetic gene regulation, defined as heritable alterations in gene expression without changes in DNA sequences, plays a crucial role not only in mammalian development but in cancer development and progression. Therefore, it is critical to understand the epigenetic mechanisms involved in each step of cancer progression and metastasis. Currently, our center is taking multidisciplinary approaches to understand how the expression of genetic information is regulated and altered during cancer metastasis. Our studies will set the stage for the development of new anti-cancer therapeutic drugs that control cancer metastasis and eventually benefit patients and their families who suffer from cancer.

Mobile Sensors And IT Convergence Center (MOSAIC) in KI for IT Convergence
Nowadays smart phone is becoming an important part in human life. In addition to phone-calls, we gather information and enjoy the vast contents of it such as App-Store, which makes us almost impossible to live without one. In the near future, with the installation of measuring sensor it will make our life even more convenient. For instance, we will check our health by passing the exhalation of our breathe through the smart phone and monitor the pollutants in the air by just pressing the app in the menu.
For the preparation of the future technology in smart phone, Mobile Sensors And IT Convergence Center (MOSAIC) is founded in April, 2012 as a new research group in KIITC, The development of the human mobile-appliance system combining various chemical and bio sensors with IT technology will be the main pursuit. The MOSAIC stands close to the industrialization of the laboratory results produced in KAIST. The groundworks of the results will be reshaped to fit in mobile device and decorated with customed IT technology at MOSAIC. The activities in MOSAIC will take a crucial part in creating new life pattern and new culture for smart phone.

“C-FRIEND: Center of Field Robotics for Innovation, Exploration aNd Defense” in KI for Design of Complex Systems
C-FRIEND is a joint research effort led by Professors Dae Gil Lee(ME), Hyunchul Shim(AE), Jinwhan Kim(OSE), Jiyun Lee(AE), Hanlim Choi(AE). Field robotics is a sector of robotics that deals with various problems with outdoor robots. C-FRIEND aims to provide innovative solutions to develop a group of highly adaptive autonomous agents resilient to challenging outdoor environment. The participating faculty members have years of experiences in advanced materials, control, navigation, and coordination. Our group envisions a group of stealthy and enduring robots in the air, on the group, and under the water to perform complex missions in a cooperative manner to collect information, neutralize adversary agents. In pursuit of such a goal, we will perform joint research in providing ingenious solutions to many challenges from various aspects in field robotics. We are sure that we will be playing a crucial role in the field robotics, which becomes increasingly important for science, industry, and defense.

Graphene Research Center (GRC) in KI for the Nanocentury
Graphene Research Center (GRC) was selected as a key research center of KI for the Nanocentury. As is well known, graphene, two-dimensional one-atom-thick planar sheet of carbon atoms densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice, has attracted explosive attentions due to its extraordinary electrical, optical, and thermal properties. In addition graphene’s outstanding mechanical flexiblity allows graphene-based electronic and photonic devices to be flexible, bendable, and even stretchable. If we would have methods to utilize fully these outstanding properties of graphene, we can realize the next generation human-friendly IT/BT/ET convergent systems based on graphene materials. To this end, 11 renowned professors and more than 80 students from 6 departments will participate in the convergent research projects on graphene materials and devices. In the Graphene Research Center, we will focus on the novel synthesis and controlling methods for high-quality graphene and IT/ET device applications of graphene. By pursuing the world-class excellence through the cooperative research activities between outstanding research groups from different disciplines inside or outside of KAIST, the Graphene Research Center will be a national and global research hub in graphene science and technology.

Center of Optics for Health Science in KI for Optical Science and Technology
Recently, rapid advances in high resolution biomedical imaging systems have played critical role to elucidate key mechanisms in human diseases by providing invaluable insights those were impossible to obtain with conventional approach. Combined with newly emerging nano-bio-photonic technologies, it now allows the visualization and manipulation of molecular and cellular processes in living organism in unprecedented level. Our center’s multi-disciplinary members focus on developing next-generation biomedical imaging technologies and utilizing them to investigate human diseases in completely new way, which can lead to innovative novel diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. To maximize the expected impact, strategic principles of our center is to set research aims those are human disease-oriented with clear clinical implications and pursue novel imaging techniques in critical needs driven by biological research or clinical application. On-going developments of advanced bio-imaging system include minimally invasive intravital microscopy, high-speed Doppler optical coherence tomography, quantitative phase microscopy, super-resolution imaging and label-free chemical imaging.
